Preliminary course

Mathematics preliminary course

The course repeats mathematics content from school that is relevant for the start of studies (module "Mathematical Methods in Economics A"). It consists of a daily lecture given by one of our lecturers and daily practice sessions supervised by student tutors. Those for whom it has been a while since their last math lesson due to training, military service, civilian service, etc. have the opportunity to assess their level of knowledge and identify gaps. The course is also recommended from the point of view of getting to know fellow students and the local conditions. The student council usually invites you to an introductory evening.

The preliminary math course has been running since 18.03.2024. It is no longer advisable to join at this time. There is an intensive tutorial during the semester in which you can catch up on any missing previous knowledge. Come to the information event on 4.04., 3-5 p.m. in lecture hall C. Afterwards there will be an opportunity to get to know people with the student council.

Literature & Course content

The course content is based on chapters 1-5 of the textbook Mathematics for Economics by Sydsaeter and Hammond. There are several editions with the same content. The only difference is the different external presentation and the unique access to online content (MyMathLab). This web content is the e-text of the book, additional exercises, tutorials and exam simulations, which only one (registered) person has access to.

All editions are available in bound form in the libraries. All editions can be used for the course, although the page numbers may differ from those given by the lecturers or tutors. The book is now also available as an online version in the library. This requires you to log in with your Uni-ID. You will receive the Uni-ID with your enrollment documents.
