Greix—Decline in apartment prices for existing stock, new construction prices stable
A comparison of apartment price trends by year of construction in Germany’s largest cities reveals a notable pattern: While prices for new buildings have experienced a relatively modest decline from their peak, the value of existing properties has fallen by more than twice as much. This finding comes from a comprehensive data analysis conducted by the German Real Estate Index (Greix), a project of ECONtribute and the Kiel Institute. In cooperation with local real estate expert committees, transaction prices of German residential real estate are tracked using state-of-the-art scientific methods.

Integration Boosts Labor Market Opportunities for Migrants in Germany
Workers with a migration background have particular disadvantages in Germany´s labor market if they live in an ethnic enclave. After being laid off, these people are significantly less likely to find a new job than their German colleagues: Over five years after job loss, the probability of employment is on average 5.2 percentage points lower. These research results are published by the EPoS Economic Research Center of the Universities of Bonn and Mannheim in the discussion paper “Job Displacement and Migrant Labor Market Assimilation”.

Real Estate Prices in Germany stabilize
The downward trend for real estate prices in Germany was partially halted in the second quarter of 2023. Compared with the first quarter of 2023, many prices are even rising slightly again, although there is still a significant drop compared with the previous year and the peaks. This is shown by the latest update of the German Real Estate Index (GREIX), a project of ECONtribute and IfW Kiel, which evaluates the actual sales prices of German real estate according to the latest scientific standards. Research has consistently shown that individuals who possess a realistic perception of their abilities tend to excel in life compared to others. The ability to accurately assess oneself, whether contemplating an apprenticeship or pursuing higher education, choosing between language or science disciplines, or determining the best-suited path, plays a vital role. The precision with which young people answer these critical questions is heavily influenced by their social environment. A study by professors from the Department of Economics Armin Falk and Florian Zimmermann, together with Fabian Kosse (University of Würzburg) and Hanna Schildberg-Hörrisch (Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf) developed in cooperation at the Institute on Behavior & Inequality (briq), which systematically tracks the development of children from nearly 600 families, confirms this notion.
