Stenhammar's primary field of research is labor economics, and he has also worked on economic history, political economy, and, more recently, migration. His research has focused on how different public policies affect the labor market and political outcomes. In his research, he uses modern econometric methods with large register-based datasets to identify causal relationships. Also, he utilizes machine learning methods to digitize archived documents and analyze text data.
At the University of Bonn, he teaches topics in text data methods for PhD students and Applied Data Analytics for BSc students.
